Your Check Engine Light Is On

Check engine light on on a speed gauge of a modern vehicle

Fans of the CBS comedy The Big Bang Theory have gotten some laughs over the writers’ running gag about Penny’s check engine light being on. To celebrate Car Care Month, we wanted to start our serious discussion about your car’s health with a few laughs.

The infamous check engine light first appeared on the scene in 1996 as a standard on all vehicle makes and models. It alerts an owner that there’s a problem with the vehicle’s engine or powertrain. Like Penny, many owners hope it will just go away; however, ignoring that light can affect your fuel economy, cost you more in the long run or even leave you stranded like Sheldon and Penny.

If you’re seeing that little orange light, take your car to a repair shop. A trained technician can connect your vehicle’s computer system to a diagnostic tool to find the cause of the problem, heading off more expensive repairs.

While you’re at the facility, it is also worth having your wiper blades, hoses, belts, exhaust system, battery, tires and brakes checked over to ensure that your car performs at its best. Maintaining your vehicle helps keep you, and everyone else on the road, safe.

If you have unaddressed scratches, dents and dings on your vehicle, Car Care Month is also a good time to have an auto body shop give you a repair quote. Fixing a blemish on the outside of your vehicle can prevent rust from developing and can prolong the value of your vehicle. If you are considering selling or trading in your vehicle, a fresh coat of paint may also bring you a higher price or trade value.

If you wish to address a scratch, ding or dent, contact us today at 510.481.8000 for a free quote. Our trained technicians will have your vehicle looking like new.

Happy Car Care Month!
