What do you do if your car breaks down while on the freeway?

Countless individuals are injured on the freeways of California during breakdowns that force them to pull off to the side of the road. It’s extremely dangerous and puts the driver and all passengers at risk.

The California Department of Motor Vehicles has provided some helpful tips for how to proceed should your car become disabled while on a freeway.

  1. Keep your focus on safety: Move your vehicle on to the right shoulder if possible. Call boxes are located between every quarter mile to two miles on California freeways. Park as close to a call box as possible.
  2. If you have no choice but to exit your vehicle, do so from the right side doors, away from traffic. Exiting through the passenger side doors may mean climbing over the center console in most circumstances, but its better than risking your life exiting into potential traffic.
  3. After using the callbox and arranging for assistance, return to your vehicle again through the passenger side and put on your seatbelt.
  4. Stay inside your vehicle–seatbelt fastened–until help arrives. Staying in your vehicle provides a shell of protection that is not offered when you are standing freely on the roadside.
