Summer is all about sun, fun and fresh fruits and veggies.
This month, the unassuming zucchini takes center stage and brings on the fun when the South Hayward Lions Club hosts a weekend-long festival paying homage to these green and yellow beauties.
The 34th annual Hayward Zucchini Festival will be held Aug. 20th and 21st from 10am to 8pm at Kennedy Park, 19501 Hesperian Blvd.
Fun for the whole family, the festival features live entertainment by Bay area talent, arts and craft, kids rides and lots and lots of food, including the prolific veggie star in many forms both sweet and savory. There will be cooking demonstrations and the Great Zucchini Cook-off.
Zucchini is known as the jewel of the summer. Technically a fruit and not a vegetable, it is considered a powerhouse full of vitamins A, C and K, potassium, magnesium and folate. The super fruit can help reduce blood pressure and lower risks for diseases like certain cancers, heart attacks and strokes.
Organizers are planning for up to 30,000 people to attend the event that serves as a fundraiser for many local nonprofit groups and charities. If you plan to be one of those 30,000 people, check out admission and discount ticket information.
