People today are spending far more time inside. In fact, it’s predicted that people spend 90 percent of their time indoors, according to a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency report about indoor air quality. The trouble with that statistic is that time indoors comes with increased exposure to indoor pollutants and that exposure brings increased health risks.
Getting outdoors has significant benefits for both our physical and mental health.
A University of Michigan study suggests that a nature walk lowers levels of stress and depression. Plain and simple, it’s a mood boost.
Other experts and studies note getting outdoors leads to increased fitness levels; exposure to natural Vitamin D which leads to stronger bones and better blood pressure and blood sugar levels; better focus; greater happiness; strengthened immunity; improved eyesight; better sleep; greater fat burning capacity; and a host of other physical, spiritual and psychological benefits. All this boils down to the fact that getting outdoors will do a body good.
Our Bay Ram Collision team encourages you to take time for yourself and get outdoors this month. Head out to see the redwoods, bridges and wildlife in the Muir Woods National Monument, open from 8 am-8 pm this spring and summer. You can also check out San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island or Golden Gate National Recreation Area or one of the state’s other national parks or natural or historic landmarks. From April 16-24, admission will be free at those National Park Service sites that charge admission.
